What's a soy candle?
Soy candles are made from soybean wax, a renewable resource. Soy wax is non-toxic, burns cleaner and longer, and cleans easily with soap and warm water.

Do you use any paraffin?
No, paraffin is YUK!
Do I burn soy candles the same way as regular candles?
Soy candles must be burned in one of our containers. Since soy wax is very soft and melts at a lower temperature, it won’t hold its shape and will just pool.
Why does my soy candle look frosty? Is it drying out?
To minimize frosting, try to keep your candle out of direct sunlight and florescent lighting. Even changes in the weather can cause additional frosting. It is almost impossible to stop the soy wax from blooming. It's just one of the beautiful and natural features of this wonderful wax. And based on some informal, highly unscientific studies we've conducted, a candle's looks are not nearly as important as smelling good and lasting a long time.
Why do I need to keep the wick trimmed?
Always keep it trimmed to about ¼” to keep the candles from smoking. Although our candles are paraffin-free and dye-free, soot may accumulate on the jars if the wick is too long or the candle burns longer than 3 hours.
Why is there a big black “bubble” at the top of my wick?
Also called “mushrooming”, this is the carbon build-up from burning the wick too long. Do not burn your candle more than 2–3 hours at a time. Remember to keep your wick trimmed. Color dyes and artificial fragrances can also cause “mushrooms”.
Why do some of your wicks have a dark center?
That’s the hemp core you see. We use either 100% cotton wicks or hemp core wicks.
Why do some candles have lead or zinc in their wicks?
This makes the wicking process easier by making a stiffer wick. However, lead and zinc emit unhealthful quantities of toxins in the air you breathe.
How should I store my candles?
Store your candles in a cool, dry place, away from direct and indirect sunlight. Soy candles will discolor when exposed to too much light for an extended period of time. Also, your candles will start to melt at high temperatures so keep them in a cool place.
Can I get a scent that is no longer listed on your site?
Just call or email us to see if it is still available.
How do I clean soy candle spills?
We just use very warm soapy water using a mild detergent.
How do I remove the metal wick thing at the bottom of the container?
Just pour hot water into the container and wait a few minutes. The wick tab will pop right off. Be careful not to use your fingers or any sharp objects when doing this.
Why does my candle look “sweaty”?
“Soy Sweat” may occur when there is an extreme change in temperature. Due to its lower melting point, soy wax can sometimes release excess moisture. This usually occurs during shipping—candles sitting in a hot warehouse waiting to get delivered or in a delivery truck on cold day. Soy Sweat can be wiped off with a tissue and will not affect the quality or performance of your candle.
Are your candles triple-scented?
We mix the maximum amount of oils that our wax will allow and test each one for its scent-throw to make sure you don’t have to stand on top of the candle to appreciate it.
Do your candles smell good “to the last drop”?
YES, they smell good to the last drop! We have tested hundreds, yes hundreds, of scents to make sure you can smell them from the time you light them until the wick burns out.
I have asthma/allergies. Can I burn soy candles?
As with all products, check with you doctor or allergist before burning soy candles. Sparx Candles co-founder Ally Monje developed adult asthma several years ago and started burning soy candles under the direction of her doctor. She has been medication-free for almost three years.
What is candle memory?
When burning your candle for the first time, make sure you burn it at least an hour per inch of its diameter, or let it pool from edge to edge. For instance, our 10oz Spa Candles are approximately 3 inches in diameter and should burn for at least 3 hours to establish its memory burn and increase its scent throw. Not burning it long enough the first time will cause “tunneling”.
What is tunneling?
Tunneling is caused by not burning your candle where the wax pool is from edge-to-edge the first time. Tunneling will waste wax and may not produce a good scent throw.
Do your candles create soot?
If you burn your candle properly, your candles will burn virtually soot-free. Soy wax does not produce soot, however if you burn your candles too long and don’t trim your wick, they will begin to smoke. Please refer to the burning instructions on the bottom of our candles.
What… I shouldn’t blow out my candles?
Blowing candles out can cause splattering of hot wax and can be dangerous. Extinguish them the smoke-free way with a wick dipper. Simply push your lit wick into the wax then pull your wick back up. Be sure the wick is centered in the candle. When completely cool, trim your wick to at least ¼” before re-lighting.
Where should I burn my soy candles?
Place them on a stable, flat and hard surface away from drafts and flammable items, children, and pets. Never leave a candle unattended.
Should I trim my wick before re-lighting it?
Yes! Always keep your wick trimmed to at least ¼” before each burn. Make sure your candle has hardened and your wick is cool before trimming. Simply pinch the top off with a tissue or napkin or use a wick trimmer. This helps cut down on soot and promote longer candle life.
Can I use a candle warmer with your candles?
We have never tested them on candle warmers. We recommend burning our candles to experience maximum performance… that’s what we made them for. Although you can use a warmer if you cant burn it where it is, but it will not emit the fragrance as well as if it were burning.
Why is there a “wet spot” on the soy candle jars and votives? Is this a defect?
No, this is where the soy wax has adhered to the jar. This is normal and is caused by temperature variations causing expansion and contraction of the soy wax. This is normal and does not affect the quality or performance of your candle when burned properly.
